LINEWORK is a dynamic series of online interactive freehand drawing workshops led by architect and conceptual artist Lorenzo Nassimbeni. Designed for architects, designers across disciplines, and artists—whether seasoned professionals or curious students —LINEWORK offers a unique space to explore architectural and artistic concepts through the liberating medium of freehand drawing.

Each workshop has its own unique theme. Participants draw live during each session, uncovering unexpected insights and honing their skills under Lorenzo’s guidance. Whether you are looking to refine your drawing techniques or rekindle your passion for drawing, we invite you to join our workshops and embark on a creative journey filled with discovery and inspiration.

CPD points are available for all SACAP-registered professionals. Each workshop is worth 1 CPD point.

EXPLORE ARCHITECTURE WITH INK AND BRUSH : 12 April 2025

Materials

Drawing materials

Essential items:

  1. pencils (graphite-various thicknesses) (essential)

  2. pens (various thicknesses) (essential)

  3. paintbrushes (1 x small, 1 x medium, 1 x large)

  4. inks (black) -colour ink is optional, but encouraged.

Optional items:

  1. colour pencils / crayons / coki pens (Sharpies, Copic, or similar) / Conté crayons

*Note-

Black ink:

At least one pot of black ink is essential. A 50 ml bottle should be enough, but invest in two or more bottles if you know that you like to use a lot of ink when you draw. You will not need more than three bottles.

Colour ink:

It is ideal but not essential to get one or more pots of colour ink. The decision is based on how much you like to work with colour when you draw. If you decide to get some colour ink, one 50 ml bottle should be enough. Again, invest in two or more bottles if you know that you like to use a lot of ink when you draw. You will not need more than three bottles. You may use as many colours as you wish. It is fine to work with only one colour if you prefer. I would encourage you to get some colour ink, as this will give you the opportunity to discover new drawing techniques that you might not be familiar with. This will enrich your drawing process and you will be able to use these inks in the future. If you strictly like to work with black ink only, by all means do so.

Brushes:

Drawing accessories

Essential items:

  1. glue for sticking down paper

  2. scissors or craft knife

  3. normal ruler ruler

  4. steel ruler

  5. cutting mat or surface on which you can cut paper (a sheet of A1 cardboard will do)

Optional but useful items:

  1. masking tape

*Note-

Normal ruler :

You will be using a normal ruler as a drawing tool. You will be placing ink on the edge of the ruler and transferring the ink to the drawing page to create lines. A 300 mm ruler is ideal to use. Use a plastic ruler, or a ruler made of a material that does not absorb water. Do not use the normal ruler when cutting paper with a craft knife.

Steel ruler :

This is good to use when cutting paper with a craft knife as it allows one to be accurate. One can also use scissors to cut the paper. This is less accurate, but sufficient. The steel ruler is an excellent option for transferring the ink to the drawing page to create lines, as described above. A 300 mm steel ruler is sufficient.

Paper

  1. 10 sheets of A2 white cartridge paper (120 gsm or above)

  2. 10 to 15 sheets of either A4 white bond paper (any gsm)

  3. 10 to 15 sheets of A4 colourful paper (any gsm)

*Note-

For the A2 cartridge paper, it is ideal to use a 120 gsm (or above) grammage so that the paper can absorb the ink. If you cannot get 120 gsm or above, a thinner paper will suffice. We do not wish for the paper to tear by applying large amounts of ink onto the page. Consider this when selecting your paper.

The reason for the stipulation to use the A2 size of paper is that it allows one to break beyond the often-used A4 and A3 size. The A2 size allows one to draw more freely and at a larger scale. It opens up many possibilities for conceptual design exploration. If you really prefer to use A3 or A4 paper, by all means do so, but do take into account the above.

Depending on your process, it might be that you do not use all the paper. In this case, the paper can be used in the future for other workshops or opportunities you take to explore the techniques you have learned in the workshop. It is always best to have more paper than you require as a contingency.

A glass jar / liquid container

It is important to have a glass jar / liquid container to clean your brushes in, and dilute the ink (if you wish to).

Kitchen towelling / old cloth

It is useful to have some kitchen towelling or an old cloth to dry your brushes and hands with during the workshop.

Old clothes

Working with ink can sometimes be a messy process. At the workshop wear old clothes that you do not mind getting ink on, or an apron / pair of overalls. Make sure to protect the floor beneath your workstation in case ink spills on it. Placing some old newspapers on the floor will help with this.

A notebook / sketchbook

A notebook / sketchbook is good to have so that you can make preliminary sketches and write notes during the drawing exercises if you wish.

Smart phone

A smart phone that has a digital camera is necessary to take photographs of your drawings made in the workshop.

Lamp

It is useful to have a table lamp to shed light on drawings which you will make in the workshop, so that you can photograph them. This is not an essential item.

Readings

San rock art ink prints-Balekane Legoabe

The Essence of Cities-Lorenzo Nassimbeni

Ink art symposium-Adrian Cheng
